‘Sea Shanties of the Subconscious' was a sound sculpture driven by the sea, installed on the old pier at Lorne on south-eastern coast of Australia . It was intended to lament the decline of the ecosystem and fishing industry of this locality. During October and November 2007 it played a dynamic rhythm of the ocean. As each wave struck, air was forced up into a set of tuned organ pipes on the pier. A total of 14 pipes were tuned to a bass F minor chord and a high F diminished chord. They articulated the complexities of the wave frequencies and tidal movements. The sculpture won two awards as part of ‘The Littoral Edge', the Inaugral Annual Lorne Sculpture Exhibition. |
